He is also preceded in death by his parents Brooks Nelson and Nadine Waters, and also by his nephews Allen Haskins, Matthew Haskins and Tyler Smith. Alan retired from Volusia County Road and Bridge and Solid Waste Management after 35 years. He loved and respected all of the men he worked with, never asked anyone to do anything he wouldn't do himself or was already doing. He remembered his employment with the county as good times. Alan loved music (especially country music). He loved Cher. He also loved being involved with Orange City Little League and all things related to baseball, fun, young players and their parents. Alan grew up in Volusia county and the natural beauty of his surroundings was a huge part of his life . He fished the jetties at New Smyrna and Ponce Inlet at night with cast nets and taught his sons how to body surf on the waves at Ponce Inlet. He taught his sons and nephew Tony to swim at Blue Springs, where we usually picnicked at least twice each week. Alan was placed in his final resting place from the bow of the beautiful Arabella on June 11, 2021 at Ponce Inlet harbor in a sunrise service. Ryan Moore and Wayne Smith placed his wreath, decorated by Patti Smith, in the water while (Go Rest) HIgh on the Mountain played in the background. The songlist was made from requests by loved ones, including many who could not attend. Alan's ashes were then released by family and friends. Alan will be missed and remembered by all who knew him.
