Catherine Berna Obituary

Catherine Kelsey Berna, passed away peacefully at The Cloisters on September 30, 2011.
Mrs Berna was born in New Haven, CT on April 1, 1922. Kitty, as she was affectionately
known, moved to Orange City, Fla in 1946. For the past 6 years she had lived at The Cloisters
in DeLand. She worked for James Mauney Engineer for many years and DOT in DeLand.
She retired from DOT in 1988. Kitty enjoyed knitting, crafts, cross-stitching and being with
her family. Over the last forty years she would cross-stitch a Christmas stocking for every
member of her family. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She was predeceased
by her husband of 60 years, Gene Berna, her grandson, James Roberts and her step-granddaughter,
Melissa Ellzey Combs. Kitty is survived by three daughters, Karen (Bill) Ellzey of DeLeon Springs,
Janet Berna of Lake Mary and Betty (Ric) Deen of Lake Helen and her two sons, Gene Berna and
Charles Berna of Griffin, GA. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was a firm believer in Christ, His spirit shined through her. Tho our hearts are broken we take
faith in knowing our mother is with our heavenly Father. Her family would like to especially thank
the staff at The Cloisters and Hospice for the wonderful care and friendship that was given to our
mother. Kitty will be remembered for her generous and caring nature, sense of humor and
commitment to both family and friends. Memorial donations can be made in memory of
Catherine Berna to Vitas Hospice, 2381 Mason Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32117 or
the American Diabetes Assoc., Gift of Remembrance Headquarters, 1101 N. Lake Destiny Rd.
#114, Maitland, FL 32751-7105. A graveside service will be held Monday, October 3, 2011 at
1:00 pm at Lake Helen-Cassadaga Cemetery. Online condolences can be made at

of her arrangements.
