Walter D. Ashley, 96, of DeLand passed away December 25, 2018 at Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler in Orange City. He was born on October 10, 1922 in Bristol, CT and served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII as a Tail Gunner on B-26s with the 320th Bomb Group. After the war, Walt became a master watch and clock maker and moved his family to Florida in 1955. Walt retired from Sears in Daytona Beach in 1987. He was a member of several area Baptist Churches, where he served as a deacon and choir member. Walter enjoyed camping, traveling, and photography. He was a handyman and an inventor and gadget guy. He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Evelyn Juanita Ross Ashley and daughter Lisa Marie Ashley. Survivors include sons Brian Ross Ashley (Sandie) of Toronto, Canada), Walter D'Vaughn Ashley (Carol) of Land O' Lakes, FL, Mark Kevin Ashley (Christy) of South Daytona, FL and Gordon Donald Ashley (Verdonna) of Elizabeth City, NC; daughters Marcia Lynn Ashley Bradford (William) of Port Orange, FL and Martha Ann Ashley (Bill Fraser) of DeLand, FL; sister Gladys Makara of Morehead City, NC; 9 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Allen-Summerhill Memorial Chapel DeLand at 10am on January 12th followed by interment with military honors at 3pm at Magnolia Cemetery in Lecanto, FL.
