Walter James Lougheed died peacefully surrounded by his family in the Florida Hospital Hospice of Deland on July 24th, 2017 having recently celebrated his 97th birthday on June 24th.
Walter is survived by children, Robert (Merrill), Martin (Barbara), Patrick, Kirk (Deborah), James Putnam (Susan), Catherine Slade, Andrew Putnam (Nancy), Winnie Patricoski (Mark), grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin, Oleg, Julia, Gregory, Matthew, Jessica, Micah, Trevor, Arrietty, Truly, Emery, Madeleine, Cadence, Trinity, and Josh, Great Grandchildren Roan, Juliette, Tristan, Evangeline and Troy.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents Wellington Robert Lougheed in 1962 and Bertha Lougheed (Blackburn) in 1967, by his cherished wife Julia Louise Lougheed (Martin) in 1975 and his beloved wife Helen Terrell Lougheed (Busby) in 2012.
Walter was born on June 24, 1920 in Wyandotte Michigan to Wellington Robert Lougheed and Bertha Lougheed (Blackburn). He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1938; Michigan State University in 1967 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice, and Florida Atlantic University with a Masters of Pubic Administration degree in 1975.
Walter was employed by the Atlantic Pacific Tea Co. (1937-1940); the Flint Police Department from which he retired in 1965 as the Superintendent of Records and Identification; Dade County Public Safety Department from which he retired in 1978 as the Assistant Director of Public Safety. After his retirement he served as an adjunct instructor at Florida International University and managed a successful security consulting business, W.J. Lougheed and Associates, from 1981 to 2002.
Walter served his country long and faithfully,
enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps one month after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and was trained as pilot and bombardier. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1943 and released from active duty in 1945. He then served in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, retiring in 1974 with the rank of Colonel.
Walter married Julia Louise Martin on September 18, 1948 with whom had four children, Robert, Martin, Patrick and Kirk. He married Helen Terrell Busby Putnam in 1977. His children remember him as a loving, kind, and tolerant father.
Walter was an accomplished pilot. He was an active and dedicated member of the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and often volunteered at The St. Barnabas Faith at Work Food Pantry and served as a Facility Advisor at the Deland Juvenile Detention Center. He also was a 32nd Degree Mason and belonged to the Kiwanis Club of Deland as well as a member of the Deland Chamber of Commerce.
There will be a viewing at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave 6 pm on Friday July 28th, and a funeral is scheduled for Saturday, July 29th, 11:00 am at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church; 319 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Deland, Florida, with a reception to follow at the Canterbury Room of St. Barnabas. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Walter's life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Barnabas Faith At Work charity. Additional funeral services with a graveside memorial will be held at the Flint Memorial Cemetery, Mt. Morris, Michigan.
